We all have bad habits when it comes to our health. It is easy to feel guilty about them and to beat ourselves up over them. However, some of our bad habits are really not that bad, while others can be costly to our health. See if your bad health habit makes the list and find out just how bad it is.
Bad Habit #1: Skipping Routine Doctor Visits. This is one habit many of us are guilty of. So just how dangerous is it to your health? Moderately. While most individuals will not suffer the consequences of missing regular doctor visits or check ups, some others will put their life on the line from not catching cancer soon enough. Try to be more diligent about health screenings, especially if you have a family history for certain diseases.
Bad Habit # 2: You Binge on the Weekend. You stick with a healthy diet all week, but as soon as the weekend comes around, you feel like a beast that has been let out of its cage. Feeling guilty? Weekend binges are not too horrible for your health. However, you can use them to your health advantage by limiting your binge day to one day a week. Also, if you cut 100 calories from your diet every other day of the week, that gives you 600 extra calories for your day off. Having a weekly break from a strict diet can surprisingly help with weight loss, since it helps the metabolism and your state of mind.
Bad Habit # 3: You Pop Extra Pills for Pain. It is so hard to be hit with mind numbing pain. It can be easy to reach for over-the-counter or prescription relief and to take one or two extra pills because the pain is so bad. However, this bad habit is a dangerous one. Even over-the-counter painkillers can be taxing on the liver, while prescription painkillers can be addictive. When pain hits you like a freight train, take the minimum dosage, drink more water, and rest in a dark room for a few minutes. Give the medication a chance to kick in. Talk with your doctor about increasing your pain medication dosage or looking into the pain further if pain is still unmanageable and frequent.
Bad Habit # 4: You Load Your Coffee with Extra Goodies. While this bad health habit will not kill you, it can cause you to gain weight. Adding just 50 extra calories a day to your coffee through sugar, half and half, or flavored creamers can result in an extra five pounds a year. Also, all the extra sugar is not doing your body any favors. Try getting yourself up and moving in the morning with unsweetened green tea and a protein-rich breakfast instead.
Bad Habit # 5: You Skip the Seat Cover in Public Restrooms. This bad habit is definitely something not to worry about, since most public restrooms are cleaner than you think. In fact, your own home toilet may be crawling with more germs since it doesn’t get cleaned every day. However, it is best to be safe than sorry and use a cover when out.
So how did your bad health habits score? Now is the perfect time to write down all of your bad health habits. Tackle one each month, replacing it with a healthier habit. For example, replace loading your sugar up with coffee with either drinking your coffee black or skipping the morning java all together.
